Frequently Asked Questions

There is no strict timeline for completing the five required courses. However, we recommend that you complete the CPVA training within six months of commencement of your studies. Most CPVA candidates enroll for the entire program at once. However, you may register for one course at a time.

Three of the five required courses are offered several times a year in a variety of cities in the United States. Some of the courses are offered in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. All of the courses are offered via webinar.

The three courses that are offered live are:

  1. Valuation of Emerging Technologies;
  2. Calculating Damages Resulting from Patent Infringement; and,
  3. Negotiating Licensing Agreements for Maximum Returns.

The two courses that are offered solely via archived webinar are:

  1. Advanced Patent Valuation; and,
  2. The Best Practices for Monetizing Patents Seminar.

The course materials and reading materials will be provided to you during each class.

The quizzes consist of true / false and multiple choice questions as well as fill-in-the-blank and short answer exercises.

No. You will be deemed a CPVA after completing the five required courses. However, those who do pass the four quizzes (relating to all courses except for the Best Practices for Monetizing Patents Seminar) will have this achievement noted on the CPVA directory.

You must obtain 70% or higher of the total possible points on the quizzes to pass.

The courses should be sufficient in preparing you to pass the quizzes. The quizzes are open-book and candidates are encouraged to refer to the CPVA Group on LinkedIn.

You have four weeks from the date of your attendance at the last course in the curriculum to complete the quizzes.

You may use the CPVA designation as long as you are a CPVA in good standing. There is a continuing educational requirement of three hours’ worth of courses per year. You may select any three hours of courses offered on our course electives page to meet this requirement. (CPVAs receive 50% discounts on all of the recorded electives listed here .) The annual CPVA maintenance fee will be $295 for 2023.
